Well, as the used material is so soft, you might need underlayment for the liners. Asking, why would you need an underlayment? Well, of course, you can out your liner on the ground itself, but, if the liner does not come with an underlayment, there is a possibility that they can get punctured or damaged by the sharp stones in the ground. So, it is always a better option to give your liner an extra layer of protection, which on the other hand also can smooth over any rough or uneven ground and sharp rocks or stones, plus, give your liners some additional term of durability.

That does not even justify it, EPDM liners are Ozone and UV Resistant. If you are planning to have some beautiful and colorful Koi fishes in your Pond, or if your garden has enough sun exposure, then nothing can beat the EPDM liners. They guard your fishes against increased temperature, heat and also prevent your liner from decaying.

Some manufacturers are there to offer you more durability, brand value for money. So, for a couple more bucks, if you get that extra security for your liners for a good 10-25 years, it’s worth the deal.

You must know, warranties come with some of the limitations, so it is advised to read all the terms and conditions carefully, or rather, when buying a pond liner, visit the company’s website, because some don’t readily show up the warranty information.

Flat pond liners have some flexible features, and that is why it can be adjusted to any shape you desire. So, whether you build a small, medium or a large pond, these are the best. These pond liners are made of different substances, i.e., Polypropylene, Reinforced Polyethylene, PVC, or EPDM Rubber.

EPDM( Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) liners are considered to be the best of its kind in the market today.

The Rubber Pond Liners are very much resistant to punctures and tears. Especially for the pools that are unusually shaped, and contain many plants and decorative rocks, they perform pretty sustainably.

They are actually soft, and hence they mold into any kind of shape and one-liner can be attached with other liners with a  pond seam tape or silicone sealant. Though they are not much flexible like PVC, they go down nicely with a minimal amount of wrinkles.

The only drawback of the EPDM liners is its weight; it is very heavy, heavier than most other pond liners. Hence, it is hard to move from one place to another, especially if it’s a large one.

If you are in search of a lightweight Pond Liners and that’s too in a pocket-friendly price, then PVC Pond Liners are the ones you must go for. The presence of plasticizers is what that makes the PVC Pond Liners flexible and highly stretchable.

The only con to the PVC liners is that they are not torn proof and can easily create leakage to your Pond. Therefore, this type of liner is not suitable for larger ponds that have a greater water capacity.  But there are some models of PVC Pond Liners which comes with a fabric that includes a polyester weave. It gives the Liners some extra strength. Apart from that, you can consider using an additional geotextile underlayment.

Point to be noted, that, the PVC liners can contain trace amounts of arsenic or other toxins, so it’s better not to use when building a fish tank, or even can be harmful to people if ingested. Plus, the plasticizer molecules can create splits and cracks in the lines’ material. Therefore, it can be detrimental to wildlife, as well.

PVC ponds are best if you need to build a reflection pool or just a small lily pond. Not recommended for colder climates as the material may cause discomfort to the fish.

Preformed liners, as the name suggests, are predesigned liners that have a particular shape. They can be made out of hardened plastic or fiberglass. So, if you like to build your Pond in a hassle-free way, and want to set up a small pond, be it indoors or outdoors anywhere, then the preformed lighters are the best option for you.  So you don’t have to worry about labor behind installing, or rather, all you can do is spend a few bucks on the pond building kit.

The downside to these liners are, they aren’t much big, and you can’t change the shape of your Pond until you dig it out and incorporate another flat pond liner.

How Do I Install a Pond Liner?

After you are done with plowing the pool and have the pond liner ready with the correct measurements, then it’s time to install it.

First, you want to check there are no harsh edged pebbles or rocks which might lead to punctures in your pond liner. To minimize the risk, lay a layer of sand with a 2-inch thickness all over the dugout area before placing your pond liner. Whatever be it, whichever pond liner you are purchasing, we always suggest investing in an underlayment.

Now put the liner evenly. You’ll need to secure them with round-edged rocks around the Pond so that it doesn’t move from its place. Or else, you can build a trench around the whole Pond and secure the edges of the liner into it and fill it in with some soil or robust.

Now start filling up the Pond with water. Watch out for wrinkles, and straighten them as they appear. If you are planning on getting a pond pump, then it’s the best time.

Decorate your Pond with rocks and pebbles, preferably around the perimeter to secure it entirely, and trim off the excess.
